ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER PARISH HEALTH COUNCIL MINUTES
20 February 2007 at noon MEETING HELD IN MARTIN HALL
Health Council Members in attendance were: Rudy and Joan Bellman, Ruth Turnis, Fr. Mark Ressler, and Tania McClain.
The meeting was opened with reflection from PrayerTime. Lunch was served. Minutes from last meeting were approved.

Tania McClain reported on Old Business.
Tania McClain (Kathy Runde had to work today) gave a report on the Bereavement Ministry. We hold the meetings monthly on the third Thursday of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There are 3-6 people who attend. We are viewing a series of 20 minute videos on loss that we get from the media center at the Archdiocesan office. The parishioners who attend are glad to be a part of this faith sharing time.

There was an informational session held on January 7, 2007 presented by Charlotte Uhlik in Martin Hall on "Organ Transplant". There were about 15 people in attendance. The program was a PowerPoint presentation and was very informative. Charlotte had brochures on organ donation.

Ruth Turnis gave a report on the Prayer Chain. Parish Life will be discussing this at their next meeting.

Tania McClain gave a report on the "Potato Bar" luncheon sponsored by Dena Stoltz at Angelus. The tour was very informational and all who attended were given a packet of information. There were 17 who attended the luncheon. Margaret Danner phoned people to attend the meeting.

There was discussion about the BP Screening being done the first Sunday of each month and the second Tuesday of each month. The number of parishioners who are served by this ministry varies from 10-25
per month. It was decided that Parish Health Ministry would continue to sponsor BP checks monthly.

There was discussion about the articles in the bulletin weekly on health topics. The health council agreed that we should continue these articles and the CareNotes program.

Tania gave a report on the AED. We ordered the Zoll AED. Tania will contact Mrs. Healey who will come and show us how to operate the AED. The workshops will be set up at the end of March or Early April. Tania will contact Dick Beaves to see when the hospitality ministers would be able to come to a meeting. Tania asked if members of Health Council wanted to be a part of the workshop. Rudy Bellman and Ruth Turnis said yes. Joan said that she would like information on the AED. Jim Connolly will be building shelving for the AED. It will be stored in the middle confessional on a shelf.

Information on Upcoming Programs and Projects:
Information was shared about Sr. Alies Therese and Lorenzo Aju coming to visit on 22-26 of February here at the parish. We will have a dinner following 5 p.m. Mass and Sr. Alies will be speaking at all the Masses. We will give them a tour of the city and visit the River Museum.

Suggestion for future programming was discussed and it was felt that the presentations should be done between Masses for optimal attendance and that it should be advertised in the bulletin for at least a month before the program. The following topics were suggested:
" It was suggested that we meet at the Diabetic Center next time and ask for a tour.
" Suggestion about vitamins and over the counter remedies---Kathy Keuter or Sue Leeson were suggested as possible presenters.

Tania gave health council members a copy of the Pandemic Report from the Archdiocese.

The meetings for Health Council for the coming year are May 15, 2007, August 21, 2007, and November 20, 2007.

The meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,
Tania McClain, Parish Health Minister

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER PARISH HEALTH COUNCIL MINUTES
16 May, 2006 at noon MEETING HELD IN MARTIN HALL

Health Council Members in attendance were: Elaine Mullin, Rudy and Joan Bellman, Sally vonCarlowitz, and Tania McClain.
Excused: Kathy Runde, Ruth Turnis. and Fr. Mark
The meeting was opened with prayer and reflection.
PrayerTime was used for this reflection. Lunch was served.

Tania McClain reported on Old Business.
There was discussion about the BP Screening being done the first Sunday of each month and the second Tuesday of each month. The number of parishioners who are served by this ministry varies from 10-25
per month. It was decided that Parish Health Ministry would continue to sponsor BP checks monthly.

Tania McClain gave a report on the Bereavement Ministry. We hold the meetings monthly on the third Thursday of the month from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. We are still looking for somewhere to go to for education on bereavement. We are sending reminder cards to those parishioners who have lost a spouse each month. We have had two requests to remove names from the list. The next meeting is the 18th of May from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

There was an informational session held on May l1 in Martin Hall on Advance Directives. There were 7 people in attendance. Our presenter was Sr. Rosalyn Ulfers, PBVM. Jan Hayertz from the educational department at Mercy accompanied Rosalyn to help with the power point presentation.

There was discussion about the articles in the bulletin weekly on health topics. The health council agreed that we should continue these articles and the CareNotes program.

New Business:
Connie Bellaver was contacted about the program to inform us about medical care. She will present a program on "How to Maintain Your Health" on June 1 at 6:30 p.m. in Martin Hall. There was discussion about a suggestion that we should ask people who have questions to call the parish office before the workshop so that Connie has some time to prepare answers for personal and specific questions. Elaine Mullin said that Connie is so knowledgeable that she will be able to answer questions without any prep time.

We talked about the attendance at health ministry programs. They are advertised in bulletins in town, with the parish nurse network, in the Golden View, and in the Telegraph Herald. It was felt that we should continue to offer programs. Tania said that most program offerings are attended by 5-25 people here at St. Joseph the Worker and at other parishes who offer health topic presentations.

There was discussion about an AED here at St. Joseph the Worker. There was a person who passed out in church and needed CPR done. There was discussion about the cost and the liability issue. There was discussion about "not needing it", and about "needing it" when it is too late because someone has a heart attack. Rudy Bellman recommended that we contact a lawyer about the liability issue and Brendan Quann was suggested. We talked about Fr. Mark concern about the "safe use" of the AED. It was suggested that we keep the AED in one of the back confessionals. Tania will contact Brendan Quann and we will check on pricing and training. Tania thinks that the training can be done for some of the hospitality ministers and Elaine Mullin felt that most of the nurses and doctors in the parish have already been trained.

Joan Bellman brought up the idea of a prayer chain at the February meeting. We had further discussion at this meeting. There was discussion about someone to organize or "chair" the prayer chain calling. Joan called the person in charge of Resurrection's prayer chain and came back to the meeting with more information about how they do their calling. She said that their prayer chain was very successful. The chairperson manages this ministry from her home. It was suggested that we put a bulletin announcement in and ask for volunteers to be phone callers for the prayer chain. Tania asked if there were suggestions from the health council about who could be the contact person for the prayer chain. Tania asked about the issue of confidentiality. Members of the health council felt that the issue of confidentiality would be up to the person who called to ask for prayer-some would not mind if their names were used and some would want the prayer request to be kept anonymous. There was discussion about the parish office/secretary being the contact for the prayer chain. The people who volunteer for this would only make one phone call. It was suggested that the chair person from Resurrection come to our next meeting to talk with us. Tania asked if this was something that Parish Health ministry should initiate. Tania said that she felt that there should be a informational and training session before the prayer chain was started.
The meetings for Health Council for the year are August 15, 2006, November 21, 2006 and May 15, 2007..

NEXT HEALTH COUNCIL MEETING: August 15, 2006 AT NOON in Martin HallThe meeting adjourned at 1:20 p.m.

16 August 2005 at noon MEETING HELD IN MARTIN HALL

Health Council Members in attendance were: Fr. Mark Ressler, Kathy Runde, Rudy and Joan Bellman, Ruth Turnis, Elaine Mullin, and Tania McClain. Sally vonCarlowitz was out of town.
The meeting was opened with prayer and reflection. PrayerTime was used for this reflection.
Lunch was served.

Tania McClain reported on Old Business.
There was discussion about the BP Screening being done the first Sunday of each month and the second Tuesday of each month. The number of parishioners who are served by this ministry varies from 8-25 per month. It was decided that Parish Health Ministry would continue to sponsor BP checks monthly even if we are worshipping at Nativity.

The committee was informed that the Stewardship Committee has asked that all committee minutes
be put on the website.

There was a discussion about the workshop on medication and hormone replacement held in June. The workshop was presented by two pharmacists from the Ruegnitz branch of Mercy Home Care. There were 8 people at the workshop and Elaine Mullin and Kathy Runde were there to greet people and facilitate the workshop. Elaine expressed some concern about some of the content presented until there was clarification given by the presenters. Elaine also said that she thinks that unless people have "an immediate need for information on a particular topic" they do not attend workshops due to the busy-ness in our lives. It was suggested that we advertise our next program in the Witness and in the Telegraph-Herald.

Sally von Carlowitz suggested a program on "The ABC's of Hospital Care". She said that it should include the ins and outs of hospital routine, hospital etiquette, and statements about what actually happens throughout hospitalization…like the fact that patient history is taken a number of times during a hospital stay. Sally had some information about the 10 warning signs of caregiver stress that she brought to the February 2005 meeting with her suggestion for the workshop. There was lengthy discussion about this topic being a presentation or an informational pamphlet. Elaine Mullin works as a phone triage nurse at Medical Associates and she will put some information together about "frequently asked questions" and who to contact to get the specific questions. We could incorporate this information into the suggested brochure. Kathy Runde had checked on the space availability at Mercy West and Steve Smith told her the space was being sold. Elaine Mullin said that Gary Rieniets retired from Mercy and Sally von Carlowitz' daughter informed me that Rich Corfman was not contacted. Ruth said that she thought Sally was looking for some in depth information about a hospital stay. There was discussion about policies changing frequently in hospitals. There was also a suggestion to refer people to websites www.web.MD and to www.Vanderbilt.org for information on specific topics.

There was a suggestion that Connie Bellaver be contacted about the ABC's of medical care. She would present a program on "what questions should we be asking our physicians?" Tania will contact Connie Bellaver.

Joan suggested a program on Natural Remedies and another on Acupuncture. No speaker was suggested at this time.

There was a suggestion at the May 2005 meeting that we do a workshop on Durable Power of Attorney and Living Wills in May of next year when we are back in our worship space.

Beth Hancock who is the contact person for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drives in the area called to ask about having another event here. We plan to have the blood drive in conjunction with Nativity if we move to that space. If not, we should wait until we are back in our own worship space here at St. Joseph the Worker. Tania will contact Beth Hancock at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center to inform her of our decision.

There was discussion on starting the Bereavement Program through Health Ministry. Kathy Runde still has an interest in this program, and would be willing to coordinate these meetings. Tania McClain, Kathy Runde and Ruth Turnis will be attending a workshop entitled "Different Ways of Grieving, Different Ways of Healing" on September 15, 2005 at the Holiday Inn. The money for the tuition for this workshop will be taken from the Educational Endowment fund according to Nancy Ehrlich, our business manager. At the May 2005 meeting, there was discussion about how often to meet, and about where to hold the meetings. This ministry would reach out to the separated, divorced, widowed and all grieving. Discussion on this topic will be continued at the next health council meeting on November 15, 2005.

There have been articles in the bulletin weekly on health topics. The health council agreed that we should continue these articles and the CareNotes program.

The meetings for Health Council for the next year are November 15, 2005 and February 21, May 16, 2006, and August 15,2006. The conference room off the gym has been reserved for the meetings and members of the Health Council will be contacted only if there is a change in meeting space.

Fr. Mark talked with members of the Health Council about the Renovation

NEXT HEALTH COUNCIL MEETING: November 15, 2005 AT NOON -- Place to be announced.

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER PARISH HEALTH COUNCIL MINUTES
17 May 2005 at noon MEETING HELD IN MARTIN HALL

Health Council Members in attendance were: Fr. Mark Ressler, Kathy Runde, Rudy and Joan Bellman, Sally vonCarlowitz, Ruth Turnis, Elaine Mullin, and Tania McClain.
The meeting was opened with prayer. Lunch was served.

Tania McClain reported on Old Business.
There was discussion about the BP Screening being done the first Sunday of each month and the second Tuesday of each month. The number of parishioners who are served by this ministry varies from 8-25 per month. It was decided that Parish Health Ministry would continue to sponsor BP checks monthly even if we are worshipping at Nativity. . Elaine Mullin said that she had one man thank her for being there on weekends so he did not have to take off work to have his BP checked.

There was a discussion about the workshop on medication and hormone replacement to be held in June. The date was discussed and we wondered if the weekend was the best time to hold this workshop. Tania contacted Heather at the Ruegnitz branch at Mercy Home Care. The workshop date was tentatively moved to June 23, 2005 in Martin Hall. Tania will contact presenter.

Sally vonCarlowitz suggested a program on "The ABC's of Hospital Care". She said that it should include the ins and outs of hospital routine, hospital etiquette, and statements about what actually happens throughout hospitalization…like the fact that patient history is taken a number of times during a hospital stay. Sally had some information about the 10 warning signs of caregiver stress that she brought to the February meeting. We could incorporate this information into a suggested brochure. There were suggestions at the February meeting about the patient advocate at Finley and Gary Rieniets at Mercy presenting this program. Sally said that she learned that everyone who is hospitalized needs an Advocate!! We had tentatively booked the date October 9, 2005 between Masses for this program. The discussion today was to go ahead with the program if we could find a place to hold it. There was discussion about moving the program from a Sunday between Masses to a week day so that the workshop will be better attended. Suggested sites were Mercy West and a conference room at Mercy. Elaine Mullin will check with Mercy about the availability of the room and check with Gary Rieniets. Sally will check with Rich Corfman at Finley who is a social worker there. Kathy Runde will check with Steve Smith about using the Mercy West Location because Mercy is giving up their rental contract in June of 2005 and will not have the space rented at that time.

There was a suggestion that we do a workshop on Durable Power of Attorney and Living Wills in May of next year when we are back in our worship space. We will talk about dates and possible speakers at our August 2005 meeting.

Beth Hancock who is the contact person for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center blood drives in the area called to ask about having another event here. After much discussion, it was suggested that we may have the blood drive in conjunction with Nativity if we move to that space. If not, we should wait until we are back in our own worship space here at St. Joseph the Worker. Tania will contact Beth Hancock at the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center after the parish council decides where we will worship.

There was more discussion on starting the Bereavement Program through Health Ministry. Kathy Runde still has an interest in this program, and would be willing to coordinate these meetings. There was discussion about meeting monthly, about training her for the ministry, and about where to hold the meetings. This ministry would reach out to the separated, divorced, widowed and all grieving. Sally suggested that we could advertise in the monthly publication from Hoffman
Schneider. Ruth Turnis said that she thought we should contact Hospice and ask about their training program. Ruth thought it was important that we know our limitations and that we may need to refer some of the folks who attend the meetings to a counselor. Tania will check with Hospice and with the hospitals in Cedar Rapids about Bereavement meetings they have in place.

There have been articles in the bulletin weekly on health topics. The health council agreed that we should continue these articles and the CareNotes program.

The meetings for Health Council for the next year are August 16 and November 15, 2005 and February 21 and May 16, 2006. The conference room off the gym has been reserved for the meetings and members of the Health Council will be contacted only if there is a change in meeting space.

Fr. Mark talked with members of the Health Council about the Renovation. The pastoral council is to make a decision at their regular meeting this month about where we will worship.

NEXT HEALTH COUNCIL MEETING: AUGUST 16, 2005 AT NOON IN MARTIN HALL.

The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.

She asked about having another Blood Drive after our renovation project and we agreed to have her call back to schedule a blood drive in the fall of 2005.
