Present:
" Connie Hardie, Julie Hill, Corinne McCullough, Joyce Scherner,
Dave Tschiggfrie, Karen Zeckser, Richard Beaves
Prayer:
" Reflection based on the second reading from January 14, 2007 ---
Gifts of the Spirit. We all have different gifts; gifts appear at different
times in our lives; different people's gifts fit together to accomplish
tasks.
Advent Thoughts:
" Sung response of Intercessions was great!
" Good use of decoration in the round!!
" Taize music during Christmas Preludes was a good addition
" Singing of the Our Father was great
Christmas Thoughts:
" Environment --- Manger figures below the cross was the BEST EVER!
Simple; natural; symbolism was great; might try to hide the spot light
better - maybe use a different spot light; raise up baby Jesus a bit more
" Drape cloth over the crucifix --- thin veil so can still see the
cross
Other Thoughts:
" Eucharistic Ministers should be instructed on touching, blessing
children in the Communion line --- this could simply be mentioned by the
captain before mass in the sacristy
" Radical Hospitality --- contact Diane Freiburger to see if other
committees would be interested in using Karen's chapter reflections ---
contact Cindy Pfiffner about sending a letter to the faith sharing groups
to see if they want to use it for Lent
" Lent --- we would like to see a canned food collection taken up
every Sunday of Lent; this would help to restock the Food Pantry; we would
like to have the children bring up the food before the ushers start passing
the baskets; would have baskets set up across the sanctuary to put the
food in
" Liturgical Choir and Wahlert Concert Choir at St. Joseph the Worker
Church on Friday, March 2, 2007
Next Meeting:
" April 2 --- FULL LITURGY COMMITTEE MEETING --- 7 pm
" Karen Zeckser will do prayer
Meeting ended
with fellowship, food and wonderful hospitality by Connie Hardie.
Liturgy Committee Minutes
Thursday,
May 11, 2006
Present:
Dick Beaves, Connie Hardie, Julie Hill, Lois Leytem, Dave Tschiggfrie,
Deb Tschiggfrie, Kevin Walsh, Karen Zeckser
Prayer:
Based on Sunday's Gospel, vine and the branches
Triduum
Evaluation
" Worship aid needed for each night
" Some confusion about washing of feet stations
" Have "common people of the parish" be foot washers instead
of parish leadership
" Make sure foot washers don't rush the process --- be willing to
wait at your station and allow time for any last minute people to decide
to come forward
" There were far fewer people in the adoration chapel by the end
of the night, but Dave "dropped the ball" this year on getting
people/groups to sign up for times of adoration
" Friday attendance was lower than normal at both the Passion service
and the stations; next year have passion service at Noon and stations
at 5PM
" Couldn't hear the readings when outside on Saturday night
" Invitation from Fr. Mark to have people come outside helped get
more of the crowd outside
" Lighting of candles outside made process faster -- no bottle neck
getting back into church and trying to get your candle lit on the way
in
" Idea for next year, have everyone come in and line up around the
outside of the pews and stand there until it is time to blow out the candles
--- neat effect with the growing light from the candles
" Music was great
" Good to have everyday people bring up flowers in procession
Radical
Hospitality Discussion
" Discussion was tabled until June 1st meeting
" Karen wrote up a summary of the book and distributed copies
" Committee members are asked to read Karen's summary of the introduction
and think about what it might reveal/suggest to us about our parish community
and what do we need to teach to our parish community?
" Please see Dick if you did not get a copy of Karen's summary
Fr.
Pat Brennon
" Stewardship committee is asking that each member of the Liturgy
Committee personally call and invite at least two other people from the
parish to come to the evenings when Fr. Brennon is speaking
" Concerns were raised to the issue of making sure Fr. Brennon speaks
to the specific topic of evangelization --- a phone call will be made
to Debbie Anderson to voice our concerns
New
Instruments
" A fund for a new organ has been growing and it reached an amount
that Dick felt was enough to purchase a new organ. After doing research
and shopping around, Dick found an organ AND a piano for a great deal.
(Both instruments are from the same store.) But, $10,000 is still needed
in order to purchase both instruments. Dick e-mailed all those involved
in music ministry at St. Joseph to have them consider giving money to
raise the remainder of the $10,000. He will know by May 14th if he will
have enough money to buy both instruments. If he does not receive commitments
from people for the additional $10,000, he will simply go and only purchase
the organ.
Miscellaneous
" Please ask the ushers to leave a few extra bulletins in the racks
of the vestibules after EACH Mass.
Next Meeting:
Thursday, June 1, 2006 --- 6:30PM
Location - 15811 Hales Mill Road, Dubuque, 52002

Liturgy
Minutes
Thursday, January 6, 2006
Present:
Dick Beaves, Julie Hill, Laura Knabel, Nancy Kringle, Lois Leytem, Corinne
McCullough, Fr. Mark Ressler, Joyce Scherner, Dave Tschiggfrie, Deb Tschiggfrie,
Kevin Walsh, Karen Zeckser
Opening Prayer:
Thanks to Laura Knabel
Stewardship Questionnaire:
The Stewardship Committee is asking each committee member to fill out
a survey and return it to the office by January 31st. In addition, each
committee member is to ask another parishioner to fill out the same questionnaire
and return it to the office as well. The questionnaire's are anonymous
and are part of the Archdiocesan Stewardship Pilot program that St. Joseph's
is taking part in. The questionnaire's will assist in finding out what
people think are the strong points and week points of our parish in regards
to stewardship and will help provide some direction for the stewardship
committee. Thank you for taking the time to fill them out. Remember, they
are due by January 31st at the office.
Vocation Committee Request:
The Vocation Committee is requesting that an intercession for vocations
be added for the weekends of January 8th and January 15th.
"Radical Hospitality" Discussion:
About half of the committee has read the book, and the other half now
have copies of the book in their hands so they can read the book as well.
We will have a meeting on Thursday, February 16th at 7:00 pm (location
to be determined) in order to discuss the book. That meeting will only
involve discussion of the book. Our meeting on February 16th is meant
to take a look at how the Liturgy Committee can share the information
from the book is some way with the Hospitality Ministers in order to elevate
our level of hospitality to those who come to Mass on Saturday/Sunday.
Lenten Subcommittee:
Date and time still to be determined. Those involved in that subcommittee
are Karen Zeckser, Lois Leytem, Connie Hardie, and Environment. Any other
members wishing to assist with Lent are also invited. Dick will send out
an e-mail to all when the date and time are set.
Advent/Christmas Evaluation:
" Seemed somewhat anti-climactic with no procession of the each week's
Advent candle - the week when Luke and his Dad lit the candle (during
the mass of Luke's First Communion), that was a great touch
o There actually is not ritual for the lighting of the Advent candle each
week, simply a blessing of the wreath at the beginning of the season
" Again, some complaints about the wreath and then the crib not wanting
to be seen --- after lengthy discussion the committee decided as its first
choice next year to put the Advent wreath and then the crib directly under
the crucifix. If those seats under the crucifix are taken out, we will
have to be more creative in how to elevate everything. Dick will talk
to Paul Duster about creating/building another platform that uses the
current Gospel book holder to use for holding the Advent wreath next year.
o The suggestion was made to add one candle to the area of the crib.
o Laura will draw of a picture of what someone could build to provide
a more permanent stable.
o A suggestion was made to hang gold cloth down from the crucifix and
going
directly to the crib to help people make that connection between birth
and death.
" We seemed to do just fine with less flowers and trees this year.
The funeral arrangement flowers during the week of Christmas certainly
helped add to the environment.
" The urns in the vestibules and the use of the Star of Bethlehem
flowers were nice.
" The Giving Tree Wreaths either need to be decorated in the side
vestibules or taken down all together.
" The addition of the few large white poinsettias was nice.
" The sung Advent response of the intercessions was well received,
as well as Father singing more during the preface before the Eucharistic
Prayer
Other:
" Lengthy discussion was had about catechesis needed for certain
parts of the mass.
o After three years, people still aren't bowing during the specific part
of the creed, and many are still not bowing their head before receiving
communion.
o Standing during the Doxology and the Great Amen is not done by any other
church in Dubuque and is not part of the liturgical rite.
o Would people hold hands across the aisle if Fr. Mark did not prompt
them? People rush back to their pew immediately after the Our Father instead
of staying put until the Sign of Peace. The sign and symbol of staying
put and beginning the Sign of Peace with those next to you either needs
continued education to help people realize the sign and symbol or we need
to give it up and let the people do what they want to do. Part of educating
people might include an invitation to allow people to come out into the
aisle each week and stay there afterwards for the Sign of Peace, but the
statement that we will no longer remind them each week about this action.
" We came to the conclusion that the Lenten subcommittee will decide
what catechesis will be done during Lent. The committee seemed to agree
that we should start with the issue of remaining kneeling during the Doxology
and the Great Amen during Lent.
Thanks:
Thanks to Laura for hosting the meeting/party.
Next Meeting:

Liturgy Committee Meeting
October 6, 2005
Present: Lois Leytem, Karen Zeckser, Julie
Hill, Steve McDonald,
Deb and Dave Tschiggfrie, Nancy Kringle, Dick Beaves, and Father Mark
Ressler
Prayer and reflection: Karen Zeckser
Old Business:
1.Children's procession at the Offertory with
food for the Food Pantry.
This was an idea presented to get more "generational involvement"
in liturgies. Dick took the suggestion to staff meeting, but the staff
felt that the food presentation was being taken care of already through
collections at school and Religious Education. Liturgy Committee then
suggested that we could still do it for special occasions and get more
active participation from the assembly. A recommendation was made that
we try it with Nativity parish this Thanksgiving. Lent was recommended
as another seasonal option to promote giving food / stewardship to include
more participation and more generational involvement.
2. Running out of newly consecrated hosts:
Discussion on how to keep the flow of Eucharistic when the newly consecrated
hosts run out and we have to use hosts in the Tabernacle. We will start
having one of the Eucharistic Ministers take the ciborium out of the tabernacle
when they come to the altar. This will not eliminate "running out"
of newly consecrated hosts but it will be less conspicuous than having
to go over to the tabernacle and get out the ciborium during the middle
of "serving"
Eucharistic Ministers Approach the Altar: SJW
does it at the Great Amen. Other parishes have the ministers approach
after the sign of peace. Father Mark suggested that we start having Eucharistic
Ministers start coming up to the altar after the sign of Peace as indicated
by the G.I.R.M. A good time to start this will be at Nativity. This would
flow better with what Nativity already does.
The Advent Environment at Nativity: Nativity
will contact us to attend a combined Advent Environment meeting at Nativity.
SJW Hospitality: Dick and the Archdiocean Worship
Committee are reading a book called Radical Hospitality. He would like
the Liturgy Committee to also read this. The goal is to have it read by
the January Christmas party and we will discuss it at that time. Hopefully
we can brainstorm and come up with ideas to improve the overall hospitality
in our parish.
Suggestion: On October 23 the parish faith sharing groups are meeting.
Dave will present to the group about being a "Welcoming Group"
for when we move to Nativity.
Pastoral Council Invitation: November 22, 2005
the Liturgy Committee is invited to come to the Pastoral Council and present
our goals and activities. We will need to address the following question
"How does the Liturgy Committee maintain energy as a committee?"
AND "What intergenerational ministries do we have to offer the parish?"
Julie Hill will report to the Pastoral Council.
Learning
.. Prayer
Service
.
And Celebration: (not necessarily in that order) is how we maintain energy
as a committee.
Committee Expansion: There was discussion on
getting more NEW people involved in committees. Father Mark suggested
that maybe we need to switch around committees. Some people have been
on the same committees for years. Do we need to shake up the active members
to integrate new blood in committees, or can we use the "Stewardship"
drive to recruit additional involvement?
A call for Adult Funeral Servers: Invite people
who may be available to serve mass for funerals and daily masses. This
ministry would be open to men and women.
Discussion about Youth Involvement: How can
we keep the youth involved in the parish? Having the youth ministers integrated
at all Masses instead of only at the youth mass was one suggestion. There
is a concern that since our school will only go to 5th grade, we may lose
the Jr High transition to high school and overall youth involvement. Discussion
on ways to keep youth active.
Eucharist for the Homebound: Suggestion: Each
homebound Eucharistic minister to be called up by name. Have each person
put their name on the pix prior to mass and Father Mark will call them
forth by name.
Announcements: Again announcements are getting
LONG! Can these be cut out? It has been discussed many times by this committee.
It was even tried to not have announcements, then only concise announcements
and eventually we go back to LONG announcements. Can they be done prior
to Mass?
Next L&SG committee meeting will involve
the Advent Committee and Christmas Committee only.
Zeckser and McCoullough = Advent
Christmas - TBA Volunteers?
The meeting adjourned at 9:10.
Respectfully submitted

McCullough, Steve and Julie Hill, Joyce Scherner, Laura Knabel, Steve
MacDonald, Deb and Dave Tschiggfrie, Nancy Kringle, Dick Beaves.
Prayer and reflection: Karen Zeckser
Deacon concerns: Deacon Steve MacDonald expressed
a concern about an issue with the new G.I.R.M..
When he has read the Prayers of the Faithful,
at times, the scheduled commentator has expressed disappointment when
all they have to do was to make the announcements at the end of Mass.
Steve would rather not read the Prayers of
the Faithful, and is concerned with name pronunciations. Therefore, he
would prefer to let the scheduled commentator read these.
The committee felt it was fine and that ultimately
it would be up to Steve and Fr. Mark to determine who will read the Prayers
of the Faithful.
Eucharist
Karen shared her concern about Masses running
short of Eucharist that was consecrated at that Mass and ministers having
to go to the Tabernacle to retrieve consecrated hosts The committee suggested
that Father consecrate more at each Sunday Mass and then less during the
week. Another recommendation was to talk to Fr. Mark to try to come up
with a way to not "run out" and perhaps take the ciborium to
the altar prior to the fractioning, it would not be as obvious that they
were "reserved".
The committee felt that assuring enough consecrated
hosts would demonstrate greater hospitality at the Eucharist table. Dick
will speak with Fr. Mark and report back.
2005-2006 Liturgy meetings

An agenda will be e-mailed prior to each meeting.
Liturgy writers
We need to expand by inviting more people to
write with already formed groups. Currently we have 3 paired groups and
there is a need to look for others to work into this ministry. Can we
think of youth that could be Liturgy writers. These were names that were
brought forward
Sarah Tschiggfrie, Tony Hardie, Emily Hunt, Anna
Hoppmann, Kate Neebel. The suggestion was made that perhaps Lynn Cunningham
and the youth board would consider doing petitions. Dick suggested letting
them do the 5th Sunday and or Holiday petitions. Dick will take this to
staff and report back at the next meeting.
Discussion on the Children's Liturgy of the
Word:
It was recommended that we implement a procession
for the children to bring up canned goods and put them in the Sanctuary
in a basket. Further suggestion would be to have a can on the altar if
the children want to put in coins. Karen shared they do this in Minnesota
at every Mass. Laura said they also do this at St. Columbkille . The song
for prep. of gifts is not sung until this procession is over. Suggestion
to do it only on the Sundays that there is no Children's Liturgy. Suggestion
that we do it on the first and second Sundays. Dick will take this to
staff and report back at the next meeting.
Renovation
Julie Hill and the renovation committee members
gave a report on the renovation progress. They shared that there were
going to be areas that may need to be left out of the current project
or at least not planned for immediately to remain within a budget of approx.$1.8
million.
The liturgy committee members recommend that
Father Mark update parishioners at weekend liturgies about the renovation
developments, either before Mass or prior to sending forth.
Next Meeting
October 6 @ 7:00pm in the School Conference
Room
Homework before next meeting;
How does the Liturgy Committee maintain energy
as a committee?
What intergenerational ministries do we have
to offer the parish?

Liturgy and Spiritual Growth
Meeting
June 8, 2005
The annual "End of Liturgical Year"
potluck meeting was held on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. Fr. Mark Ressler
graciously hosted the event.
Those in attendance were: Father Ressler, Julie
and Steve Hill, Dick and Mary Beaves, Karen and Ken Zeckser, Dave and
Deb Tschiggfrie, Kevin Walsh, Corinne McCullough and Gary, and Lois Leytem.
Following the dinner a short meeting was held
to discuss the Renovation and impending transition from St. Joseph the
Worker to Nativity Church for masses. The expected move date will be mid
July (17 or 24). The committee decided to have some kind of "Transition
Ceremony". It was suggested to have a simple blessing with a simple
procession after the 11:00 Mass of the determined weekend.
There will be a training session for Eucharistic
Ministers (and other other ministries deemed in need of transitional training).
Dick Beaves will be going over to the Nativity Church to check out their
liturgical ceremony norms. Beginning at the Nativity held liturgies, Eucharistic
Ministers will be directed to go up to the altar at the Sign of Peace.
(rather than at the Great Amen).
Dave Tschiggfie suggested that we increase
our Hospitality Minister numbers. It would be good to have as many as
4-6 more Greeters to welcome our community and outside visitors and also
to pass out the Mass booklets. Dave also recommended that the Liturgy
Committee members would be the ideal greeters if we could arrange to spread
out and attend the mix of masses offered. Dave further volunteered to
organize this endeavor.
More suggestions were: To rope off the back of the Church to have the
assembly closer to the altar and also to encourage community closeness.
This suggestion was discouraged as it may alienate some people who prefer
or need the back seats. Other methods of encouraging the assembly to come
to the front were discussed.
The Liturgy Committee will not meet again until
September. Because of space constraints and multiple meetings on Mondays
and Tuesday, it was suggested and approved that the Liturgy meetings will
be held on the first Thursday evening of the month, beginning with the
September 1, 2005 Liturgical Calendar Planning Meeting.
The meetings will be held at the Rectory until Renovation completion (unless
otherwise noticed).
A happy and safe summer to all.

Secretary pro tem
