Stewardship
Who is a Christian disciple?
One who responds to Christ's call, follows Jesus,
and shapes his or her life in imitation of Christ's.
Who is a Christian steward?
One who receives God's gifts gratefully,
cherishes and tends them in a responsible and accountable manner,
shares them in justice and love with others, and
returns them with increase to the Lord."
Stewardship: A Disciple's Response
A Pastoral Letter, National Conference of Catholic Bishops
Discipleship and Stewardship are partner values for today's Christian.
Both are responses to prior initiatives: discipleship is my response to
Jesus who says, "Come follow me!"; stewardship is my response
to God for
His giftedness of me. Jesus invites * God bestows * I respond.
Living these partner values is difficult in
today's world. Many think
being a disciple is for just a few select people, and many also think
that
what they have in terms of gifts and things has been acquired completely
through their own initiative and hard work. The values of discipleship
and
stewardship aim to reverse this thinking. Both root lives not on 'me',
but
on God. To get there requires a change of heart. Once there, however,
you
will appreciate and rejoice in a new way of life.
The Parish of St. Joseph the Worker invites
you to share this new way of
life. We want to help you live as both disciple and steward.
