Confirmation Sponsors

Each candidate chooses one person to be his/her sponsor. SPONSORS NEED TO BE CHOSEN BY DECEMBER.

A SPONSOR at Confirmation witnesses the commitment to Christ which you are making. Your sponsor will accompany you these last months as you prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Your sponsor will present you to the Archbishop and stand with you as you are anointed. Your sponsor will journey with you beyond Confirmation.
One image of a sponsor is that of a mentor. A mentor is a person who may coach you, encourage you; it is a person who has learned by experience to live the Christian life. Your sponsor as mentor may give you advice, challenge you to try harder and encourage you to develop your gifts and talents.

Criteria for selection of sponsors.

The sponsor must be:

at least 16 yr. old
already confirmed in the Catholic church
a practicing Catholic
it is appropriate that the sponsor be the Baptismal sponsor: Godparent
parents may not be sponsors
sponsors may be of either sex, but it is important that the candidate be able to identify with the sponsor in terms of Christian living
the sponsor is selected by the candidate
ideally the sponsor should be a member of the parish community who can share the faith journey of the candidate
ideally attend January and April study sessions with candidate
